Meet Jane, Founder of The Salt Pod

The Salt Pod was founded by Jane, whose work has always been rooted in care, compassion, and a belief in gentle, natural ways of supporting wellbeing. Her approach is personal, thoughtful, and grounded in real-life experience, shaped by years of working closely with people of all ages.

Jane’s Background

A foundation in complementary therapies and holistic care

My journey into salt therapy began through personal experience while caring for an elderly lady with dementia who suffered repeated chest infections and frequent courses of antibiotics. After introducing her to salt therapy sessions, I noticed a remarkable improvement within just three sessions. She is now infection free and no longer reliant on antibiotics.

While attending these sessions, I met people from all walks of life, including children struggling with skin conditions such as eczema and adults living with COPD and other respiratory illnesses. Hearing their stories and seeing the positive impact salt therapy had on their lives was truly inspiring.

Why I Created The Salt Pod

Seeing the impact across all ages

Salt therapy has also made a meaningful difference within my own family. My daughter’s two young babies attend nursery where they naturally pick up frequent coughs and colds. Through regular use of a mobile salt tent, their respiratory systems have been kept clearer from the everyday nasties they encounter, requiring far less intervention from doctors.

When I began looking for this support locally, I was surprised to discover that there were no mobile halotherapy services available in the Gloucestershire area. This gap, combined with the life changing results I had witnessed, inspired me to create The Salt Pod, a fully mobile salt therapy service covering all areas of Gloucestershire and bringing salt therapy directly to you in a convenient, comfortable and accessible way.

The Story Behind Salt Therapy

Salt therapy traces its roots back to the salt mines and caves of Eastern Europe. Miners working deep underground were surrounded by naturally occurring salt particles in the air, and observers noticed something remarkable: despite the harsh conditions of mining, these workers rarely suffered from respiratory problems and often had clear skin and strong health.

This observation sparked scientific curiosity. In 1839, Polish physician Dr. Feliks Boczkowski opened the first health resort in the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland, using natural brine and underground air to support respiratory health—particularly asthma—long before modern inhalation therapies existed.

After World War II, further developments came from German physician Dr. K.H. Spannahel, who noticed that people sheltering in salt caves during bombing raids also showed improved respiratory wellness. Alongside Hungarian geologist Dr. H. Kessler, he helped formalize the scientific study of underground salt environments, laying the groundwork for speleotherapy—the therapeutic use of subterranean salt climates.

In the 1960s, Professor Mieczyslaw Skulimowski expanded these ideas by treating patients regularly in salt chambers at Wieliczka. His success led to the opening of the first dedicated allergy treatment spa deep within the salt mine, focused on helping people with respiratory conditions. The concept spread across Europe and into former Soviet states.

Still, real salt caves weren’t easily accessible to everyone. That changed in 1985, when scientists in Odessa, Russia, developed the first halogenerator—a device that mimicked the effects of natural salt environments by releasing a fine, therapeutic salt aerosol into the air. This innovation marked the birth of modern halotherapy, enabling salt therapy to move above ground into wellness centers, spas, and clinics worldwide.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, halotherapy technology and protocols spread globally, reaching Europe, North America, Australia, and beyond. Today, salt therapy continues to evolve—from traditional salt caves to contemporary wellness spaces—offering a natural, relaxing environment believed to support respiratory comfort and overall wellbeing.
